[Earlyups] Do you rock tunes while you’re out skiing? Hiking/Touring? What about when you singled the Cave double in the TGR movie last year?
[Todd] I don’t wear headphones at all while I’m skiing. I like to hear what’s going on around me, what the snow sounds like under my skis, what’s going on with the riders around me, etc. I totally understand why some people roll this way, but especially out in the backcountry audio is pretty important, how are you supposed to hear, whoomphing, and people yelling about hazards if you’re tuned out? That being said, it’s always good to have some tunes pre-shred, it can definitely set the tone for the day.
[Earlyups] Favorite headphones or music player for tunes while skiing/traveling?
[Todd] I’ve got a Nano that goes everywhere with me and my phone is pretty stacked with tunes as well.
[Earlyups] Tell us a little bit about your band
[Todd] The band I currently play bass for is called “Motorcycle Death Machine.” It’s a few friends of mine from Salt Lake and Park City including my roommate/pro skier Cody Barnhill. I’m not sure we can justify the name of our band with our sound, we aren’t a metal band, I’d say we are more of a blues based rock band, with some heavier leanings here and there. The name sort of started as a joke, Cody and another friend were re-building some motorcycles in our garage (which is also our practice space) when the band started last year. It’s been really fun, we played some shows in Salt Lake here and there last summer and fall. The truth is our best stuff is only half-written, we had a lot of jam sessions where things were moving in a direction we were all stoked about when winter came upon us. We are collectively busy in the winter so the project is back-burnered for now. I’m not sure if Cody will be in SLC this coming summer so I’d have to say the future of the band is in limbo right now. If that’s the case there’s always the possibility of a new iteration of the group or a new band all together.
