Elyse Saugstad is a stranger to no-one in the ski industry. From making powder skiing look effortless to sending big enough air’s that make most ‘men’ squirm, Elyse is no doubt one of Earlyups favorite pro’s to watch on the big screen. We will shut up now and let you enjoy our interview with her along with her awesome Pro Playlist.
What you need to know about Elyse: 1) She rips harder than you 2) She gets after it and 3) Everyone in the ski industry holds her in high regard. We had the chance to speak with Elyse at SIA this year and were blown away by how nice and humble she was. Need less to say we are huge fans of her! Like we said above, we will quit rambling and let you enjoy her Pro Playlist (which is freaking sweet!) along with an awesome interview!
[EU] Do you listen to tunes while skiing? How about in the backcountry?
[Elyse] I do listen to music when I ski, but at fairly specific times. When I competed on the Freeride World Tour I always had music playing to get me in the zone and help shield me from all the distractions. I listen to music in the backcountry when I’m touring, it puts me on a good pace and makes those long slogs go by faster. I also like to listen to music when I go skiing at the resort solo to get in some fast laps.
[EU] Favorite pump-up song for when you’re about to do something scary?
[Elyse] When I’m about to step up to something that pushes my comfort zone I don’t listen to overly-intense music, I prefer fun music so it calms my nerves and reminds me that I’m out having fun.
[EU] Choice day of skiing? Two feet of blower, five inches of buff, just skiing scary lines, etc…? Who are you skiing with and where?
[Elyse] The best day of skiing is back home in Alaska with Cody and any one of our good friends- whether that be ripping laps on the North Face at Alyeska Resort, touring/snowmaching in the backcountry, or jumping in a heli. Ideally there is tons of fresh, stable snow but not too much that you can’t haul ass making huge, giant turns down steep faces and spines.
[EU] Favorite place to ski besides Alyeksa Resort? Outside of the US?
[Elyse] I love skiing Squaw, the Cali sunshine and huge Sierra dumps are underrated these days in my mind. I also enjoy spending time at Baker, Stevens Pass, Whistler resort/backcountry, Las Lenas, Argentina, and all over the Alps.
[EU] Do you have a go-to snack for the backcounty?
[Elyes] My backpack is more or less always stocked with a good trail mix made of almonds, pecans, dried fruit, and chocolate (chocolate is so necessary!), Kind and Lara Bars, Shot Blocs, landjagers (meat sticks), and the essential Snickers.
[EU] Apres: Beer, Cocktail or Water?
[Elyse] A good refreshing beer, but now that I’m gluten free I just watch my buds in envy while I sip on my soda water and wait to have a glass of wine with dinner.
[EU] What’s the most pathetic thing joe bro skier guy has done to try and get your attention on the hill?
[Elyse] Like ski patrol yelling and waving at you to slow down..? That’s about it but that can be fairly irritating.
[EU] The Salomon Freeski TV episode with yourself and Kim Havell was awesome. What was your favorite part of the trip besides the skiing?
[Elyse]Meandering around the seaside towns eating way too much and stopping for coffee breaks every other hour. Oh, and the volcano erupting unexpectedly made for quite an interesting diversion as well.
[EU] Be honest, is Cody chasing you down the hill when together?
[Elsye] There are moments when he’s eating my dust, but really, he’s got 60+ pounds on me- I don’t stand much of a chance most of the time, haha. We are competitive with each other but beating each other down the hill is not one of them.
[EU] Remaining White Plans? Filming with anyone? Trip Plans?
[Elyse] I just wrapped up a Warren Miller trip in Montana and am heading straight back there for a Powder Magazine article. Other than that, I’ll see where the snow flies and what projects pop up.
[Elyse] Salomon, Alyeska Resort, Scott, Arcade, Hestra, Backcountry, ABS, Kask
