What exactly is going on in the Freeride World Tour right now? With seemingly minimal 2015 coverage from the mainstream North American ski media, far and away the biggest thing we’ve heard from the FWT all year is about competitor Julien Lopez taking a scary ride in an avalanche during the Kappl (Fieberbrunn, Austria) stop yesterday. First and foremost, we are happy to report that Julien is OK.
After tomahawking the landing to an air (@ approx 0:37 in), Julien lost a ski and had to hike back uphill to get it. While hiking back up the slope, Julien triggers a substantial avalanche (@ approx 1:45 in) that carries him downhill and through some cliffs. Julien deployed his airbag and ended up on top of the snow, fortunately only suffering minor bruises.
The video below shows the slide and is the response to the event by Julien and the FWT:
After the slide, event organizers decided to cancel the event for the day. All eyes now seem to be focused on the February 14th event in Andorra at this point. This comes on the tail end of switching the location of stop #2 for the Men after Women’s runs were completed at the Fieberbrunn Kitzbueheler Alpen location. Safety/weather led to the switch, but the Women were able to finish the comp beforehand, with Lotten Rapp taking the victory.

Women’s Event Recap
