Tradeshow season has come and gone. That time of year when the outdoor industry gathers indoors under the florescent glow of convention center lighting (ironic?) and shows off next year’s swankiest gear. In this piece, we highlight some of the coolest gear for 2014/2015.
The devil’s in the details as they say. Although we aren’t seeing the major product innovations we may have seen a half decade ago we’re seeing a whole lot of product refinement. Which we believe is a good thing. With that said, here are a few trends we noticed…
1) The return of the charger. – We’re seeing more companies re-introduce or refine a 100-105mm ski with metal in it. To be honest, this is the type of ski that is more appropriate to be on more days than not so we’re stoked on this “throwback” trend. As fun as it may be to ski a 120mm floppy tipped rockered craziness in bounds, its not going to make you the rockstar a smaller, stiffer, more conventional ski will in 2D snow. Note – Rossignol Experience, DPS 105 with Metal etc
2) Light Skis – Seems every company is introducing a lighter touring ski featuring some form of “carbon fiber construction”. See 4Frnt Raven – Volkl BMT line
3) Base convexity “Spooning” – The DPS developed 3D shaping profile is starting to catch on. Elan picked it up last year and now Atomic is utilizing the surf-inspired shaping concept. Here’s to surfy turns!
