We sat down with the former Powder magazine cover girl and all around badass Kalen Thorien to get her thoughts on Saved By The Bell’s Mr. Belding, manly things done lately, her thoughts on female’s representation in the sport and (lots) more. Oh, and she also put together one kick ass summer playlist for us. Enjoy!

Where did you grow up? What is your skiing background? (race/moguls/none)
In a few places. Primarily in Boise, Idaho, but spent some time in Seattle and Germany when I was younger. I don’t have much of a skiing background. I honestly hated it when I was younger. I remember faking being sick just to get out of having to go. It wasn’t until I was about 16 when I found a love for it. Ditching school to go to Bogus Basin or Tamarack. Flailing like a beginner, but loving it.
Favorite ski film of all time?
That’s a toughie. I’d have to say Session 1242 and Idea. Session 1242 was the first ski movie I ever saw that wasn’t Warren Miller. My mind was blown. And Idea was the most inspiring. It showed such a beautiful and artistic side of skiing that was much more relatable to me at the time.
Home mountain? Favorite place to ski?
Bogus Basin, Boise Idaho and now I’m stoked to call it Alta, Utah and the Wasatch Mountains! Favorite place right now is definitely BC, but I always need a few blower bottomless Utah days in my life.
Its a good day in Utah – would you prefer to ride lifts or be skinning somewhere far from the crowds (if that’s even possible)
I need both honestly. Most likely I would be out in the backcountry, but sometimes a girl just needs to put her headphones on and ski lap after lap.
- Favorite food?
Definitely need fish tacos and pizza in my life…but also love me a huge glass of green juice and a stacked salad.
In your mind, do you believe Alaska the epitome of big mountain skiing?
It’s definitely the birthplace of big mountain skiing, but my eyes are on Canada and the Himalayas.
Best pickup line you’ve heard while skiing?
(Standing on top of untracked bottomless pow line) “After you..” ..#Win
Best ice breaker on a chairlift?
“Hey what’s up bro…oh shit, you’re a girl.” Ice…broken
Favorite apres drink? Favorite beer?
Whiskey Ginger from The Peruvian Bar at Alta is a must, and favorite beer is a three way tie between Salmon River Brewery’s Buzz Buzz Coffee Porter, Samuel Smith’s Organic Lager, and Tank 7’s Farmhouse Ale.
- Favorite summer activities?
Backpacking is my love. If I could backpack as much as I ski, that would be perfection. My boyfriend also got me into fly fishing this summer (something I never thought would happen) and you could say I’m “hooked”.. HA! But yeah, absolutely love it. Already planning backpacking trips that revolve around linking up various lakes. It’s like playing connect the dots on a map!
- How do you train?
By having fun. I probably should actually “train”, but I just stay active and eat healthy. I’m much more successful at getting strong when I’m doing activities instead of workouts. I am adding Ballet to my routine! I danced forever growing up and lately, I’ve really been missing it. Should be great for skiing. Little worried about the leotard.
Ski setup (kit/skis/touring setup etc)
It switches between the Armada 183 TST for everyday and the Armada 180 Magic J for pow. Both with a Dynafit Radical touring binding and Dynafit Women’s Mercury boot. Outerwear is Armada Akari Gore-tex Jacket and Lex Gore-Tex pant. Armada Wildling Mitten. Dragon APXs goggle. Discrete Doyonator.
Do you have any pets? Have you named them after ranges in Alaska? What do you think of naming your pet after a mountain or range in Alaska?
I don’t have any pets unfortunately. Can’t really say if they would be named after a mountain range in Alaska. Depends on the pet and if it fits. I’m a fan of random names like Percival von Stubenheim. Call him Percy for short.
If you weren’t a skier what would you be doing?
I probably would have graduated from the college I was originally suppose to go to, have my Masters in Performance Music and be playing in a symphony somewhere while sneaking off in the middle of the night to play with my rogue punk band in a dark alley somewhere…breaking all the rules of the classical musician mwhaha.
We hear you fly fish, is this something new or no?
Very much a new thing.
What is your go-to fly?
The one I don’t lose.
Do you have a boyfriend? What qualities do you look for in a dude? What are all the guys “doing wrong”? I do have a boyfriend! Partner in crime and all things fun is a better way to put it. When I was single I was looking for someone that could be my best friend on this planet that I get to do all these amazing adventures with, but at the end of the day I get to sleep with him!
Do you believe females are fairly represented in the sport?
I definitely don’t, but I also feel that we need to stop pissing and moaning about it and step up. We’re only represented as much as we want to be. When we gain confidence in ourselves, our abilities, and realize that we are a commodity in this industry, we can succeed.
Best hollywood ski movie… Aspen Extreme
The ski season is winding down, where do you go to find warm temps? Mexico, a music festival somewhere in California, Lake Powell or “the ski season never ends, snowline just gets higher”.
Definitely Southern Utah. First place to escape to the heat during mid season. Heading to Nicaragua in a few weeks. Beach livin, soakin up the sun! Should be plenty warm…
Have you ever peed your pants while skiing?
Not a full pee, but I’ve definitely let out a squirt or two getting bucked or hitting a cliff.
If you could keep all animals puppy size what animal would you have as a pet?
What is the manliest thing you’ve done lately?
….What? Sorry I was chugging a beer while watching Deadliest Catch and masturbating… (editor’s note: this is the best reply we’ve ever gotten in an interview. Literally. Ever.)
- If you were going to have wear someones elses unwashed ski gear who would be your first choice and last choice? First choice, Candide Thovex. Soaking up all his leftover sweat and funk will give me super powers. Last, John Spriggs. Not because it would be nasty, no no…his pants are as long as my body is tall. I would drown in a sea of XXXXXL.
Best excuse you’ve heard/used to call in sick on a good day?
Never called, just went up. Came up with an excuse after.
Mr Belding…cool principal or really creepy for how much time he spent with teenagers?
Can’t blame him. Kelly Kapowski is a babe.
- Fedora: Cool or only cool on Justin Timberlake and Frank Sinatra? Only cool on Frank Sinatra.
Its the apocolypse…which one do you think you have the best chance of surviving? – Zombies, Aliens, Big Ass Meteor, Crazy weather and flooding – Pick one and explain why.
Probably crazy weather and flooding. Get down to Lake Powell, steal a houseboat, grab two of every beer, and call it a day.
